Porto Tasty: Now the world is at Baixa's new restaurant Mundo

Now the world is at Baixa's new restaurant Mundo

The next time you feel like travelling around the world, you need not go farther than Baixa do Porto to have an international gastronomic experience in Mundo.

Ever since July that Mundo opened its door to the world, this establishment was born out of the idea of “opening ‘a restaurant and bar with world cuisine’, an inexistent concept in an ever more international Porto”, says the magazine Visão. The owners of the restaurants Casa de Pasto da Plameira, LSD e Tripeiro – José Ribeiro and Carlos Bravo – opened a restaurant together once more, this time at an old commercial building from the 18th century.

Interestingly enough, the plates are much more creative than you would find at another ethnic food restaurant. Instead of simply reproducing traditional food from different countries or continents, the chef Jorge D’Alte and consulting chef João Lameira opted for fusing together techniques and flavors from the many corners of the world. “We didn’t want to have a plate from each country, that would be the easiest thing to do, and something which has already been seen. Instead, we brought together different flavors in the same dish”, explains one of the partners to NiT. Currently, the three prominent continents are Asia, Europe and South America, with the aim of geographically diversifying the menu twice a year.

In addition to the restaurant, Mundo also values its bar. In partnership with The Royal Cocktail Club and The Gin House, they serve author cocktails at the entrance and a short version of the menu, to bite. Also, a DJ ensures daily entertainment, and “on the walls of the room, the graffiti paintings reflect the multiculturalism of the space through female portraits which each represent one of the continents,” according to Evasões.
